Love at first sight

Updated: Apr 24, 2018

Ever felt an instant connection when he opens the door or flashes you that stunning smirk? Get some insight to why that happens and what it means.

Instant connection is something we crave; it's a part of human nature..

Have you ever caught someones gaze and lost all your thoughts? He held the door open and as you said thank you imaginary fireworks went off around you? It's on your mind for the rest of the day. How do you deal?

There have been countless times where I've caught myself gazing too long at an attractive man. On top of that, more countless times where I've felt like a hello has introduced love into my life. Over time though, disappointment has also come a countless number of times. Each time making me think: "What did I do wrong?"

But what is love at first sight? Does it really exist?

According to a vast majority of scientists [list some names here], love at first sight truly is a thing. I was watching Brain Games on Netflix and this episode was about laws of attraction. They talked about how science has developed methods to test if someone is in love according to the areas most active in the brain.

Let's break it down a little.

Your brain is designed to scan the information that your eyes see, nose smells, ears hear, and body touches. In addition to that, your brain (since birth) adores new things! Babies put new things in their mouths and explore, and their eyes automatically wander to novelty items in their environment. This automatic response does not go away over time.

So now that you know this information, what do you think your brain is doing when you meet someone new? Well your senses are subconsciously sending messages to your brain about this individual. Surprise! Since this person is new, our mind is fresh and excited (especially if the person is attractive to us)!

So your senses took this person's features in and your mind is analyzing them, but what's your brain actually doing?

What did you feel when you locked eyes?

  • Racing heart

  • Butterflies in your stomach

  • Sweating

  • Your gaze focuses on them

  • Hands start shaking

  • Can't stop smiling

If you felt any of those, you might have never wanted it to end. When you feel what most call a 'spark', your mind is actually releasing hormones - known as dopamine - and your body reacts automatically. Your heart rate increases, pupils dilate, you might start sweating, but for sure you are feeling a heightened sense of joy. The dopamine that is being released from your mind is definitely responsible for that! Dopamine is responsible for many things, including:

  • Increasing heart rate and blood pressure

  • Mediating pleasure

  • Improving working memory

  • Increasing focus and attention

  • Decreasing pain

Trickery or Treasure

Some areas of the brain are inactive.

Scientists have also discovered though that during this state of heightened dopamine release, there is an area of the brain that remains inactive. This area is responsible for logic and reasoning. But wait.. isn't that important to have during relationships?

This brings about the saying "love is blind"... literally.

Now that you have a good understanding of what happens subconsciously during an exciting first interaction, I ask you, is this really love?

Challenge of the day

Do you think love at first sight exists? I'd love to hear your stories!!
